AIDS Statistics
- In 2006, 2.1 million Africans died of AIDS (UNAIDS, 2002).
- By 2010, there will be 20 million "AIDS orphans" in Africa. That means that in some nations one out of every 4 children will be an AIDS orphan (UNICEF, 2003).
- AIDS has already claimed 40 million lives. Rates continue to rise. (World Bank, 2002).
- In Africa, 90% of all orphans are cared for by relatives. However, with the escalating orphan crisis, the ability of the extended family system to continue to
absorb these children is uncertain. (Monash & Boerma, 2004)
- Every day, 1600 children are infected with HIV by drinking contaminated breast milk instead of formula.
- Less than 10% of children orphaned by AIDS receive any psychological or financial support from society.
